You'll spend time creating your character and three compatriots to form your party. The always-evolving character customization is one of the pillars of this franchise. Then it's off to the hills, villages and dungeons of many continents to battle monsters and discover treasure.
The game gives you plenty of tools (armor, weapons, magic, etc.) and the monsters you'll face are no slouches. One moment you're rejoicing at learning a new spell as a reward for accomplishing a task, then you're thrust into a battle where that spell may not be enough to overwhelm the monsters in your path. Nothing comes easy in "Dragon Quest IX," and it's that challenge that keeps you coming back.
As I mentioned, there is a "but." This game is great — but you honestly need to be an old hand at it to truly appreciate it. I've played a few of the previous games, but even I could see distinct elements to the game and its story, and if you're lacking that previous knowledge you may shrug your shoulders when you should be having fun moments.
"Dragon Quest IX" might not be for everyone, but if you can maintain and relish grinding out tough victories, you'll savor the rewards.
For readers who are uninitiated, the "Dragon Quest" series is by far the most popular RPG series in Japan. As is par for RPG course, the hero is soon caught up in much larger events and must travel the world helping civilians by killing stuff. Ah, how holy the life a killing machine can be.
The world of "Dragon Quest" is very anime-like, due to the fact that Akira Toriyama, the creator of "Dragon Ball Z," is the official artist for the series. In fact, several characters look like they were copied and pasted straight out of DBZ, but that's "Dragon Quest" for you.
"Dragon Quest IX" is an exemplary RPG that lets players choose just how they want to play. The sheer number of options is staggering and enticing to players who want to use their own strategies. Looks like number nine is upholding the family name.
