Once again the realms of "Dragon Quest" return, bringing colorful landscapes, monster battles and role-playing you'll enjoy until your eyes go numb. Yes, there is a big "but" tied to this game, but I won't give it away just yet.
In this, the ninth iteration of the long-running role-playing-game (RPG) series, you play as a guardian angel stripped of powers. You must scour the earthly world below to regain them and save the land. Not exactly new material here, I agree, but "Dragon Quest" was one of the originators of this genre, and its plucky charm is on full display.
You'll spend time creating your character and three compatriots to form your party. The always-evolving character customization is one of the pillars of this franchise. Then it's off to the hills, villages and dungeons of many continents to battle monsters and discover treasure.
The game gives you plenty of tools (armor, weapons, magic, etc.) and the monsters you'll face are no slouches. One moment you're rejoicing at learning a new spell as a reward for accomplishing a task, then you're thrust into a battle where that spell may not be enough to overwhelm the monsters in your path. Nothing comes easy in "Dragon Quest IX," and it's that challenge that keeps you coming back.
As I mentioned, there is a "but." This game is great — but you honestly need to be an old hand at it to truly appreciate it. I've played a few of the previous games, but even I could see distinct elements to the game and its story, and if you're lacking that previous knowledge you may shrug your shoulders when you should be having fun moments.
"Dragon Quest IX" might not be for everyone, but if you can maintain and relish grinding out tough victories, you'll savor the rewards.
For readers who are uninitiated, the "Dragon Quest" series is by far the most popular RPG series in Japan. Often, many businesses in Japan shut down on the days new "Dragon Quest" games are released because so many people have skipped work to pick up the next installment. The fact that the newest one is a DS exclusive is a great asset to Nintendo. "Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies" has some big shoes to fill, and it does not disappoint.
As is often the trend with RPGs, the main character of "Dragon Quest IX" is a nameless, speechless vacuum of a person without a shred of personality. However, usually the other characters in the player's party make up for it with entertaining or endearing traits. Usually. This time around, the entire party is just as much a personality void as the hero, but the folks at Square Enix aren't leaving players totally high and dry.
What replaces the series' usual voice acting and quirky comedy is a significant increase in character customization. Players can choose everything about their party: their names, how they look, which classes they are, and even how many members are in the party.
Players can overwhelm opponents with up to four characters or tough it out with only one, although going solo is semi-suicidal against some bosses. Except for the hero of the game, every party member can be picked up, dropped off or exchanged for someone else by visiting one in-game shop. It's possible to have a stable of characters waiting to be used in any situation.
What's more, players can even send characters from one DS to another and play together. This way, significantly higher-level characters can help weaker ones though tougher parts of the game.
Players assume the role of a Celestrian, who is basically an angel tasked with protecting one small area of the world from misfortune. As is par for RPG course, the hero is soon caught up in much larger events and must travel the world helping civilians by killing stuff. Ah, how holy the life a killing machine can be.
The world of "Dragon Quest" is very anime-like, due to the fact that Akira Toriyama, the creator of "Dragon Ball Z," is the official artist for the series. In fact, several characters look like they were copied and pasted straight out of DBZ, but that's "Dragon Quest" for you.
"Dragon Quest IX" is an exemplary RPG that lets players choose just how they want to play. The sheer number of options is staggering and enticing to players who want to use their own strategies. Looks like number nine is upholding the family name.
